A Local Printer Comments on Forthcoming ISO 14001 Revisions

West Sussex, United Kingdom (19th July, 2013) – A Local Printer, specialists in online printing services, comments on upcoming changes to the ISO 14001:2004 certification, which will introduce several new revisions.

ISO 14001 helps organisations reduce their impact on the environment, providing a framework for achieving internal and external goals for Environmental Management. When the new ISO 14001:2015 standard is published, it will have a different structure but will still follow the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) rules. A draft of the revised standard is currently available on ISO’s website, and all users are being invited to provide input to help shape it before it comes into effect in January 2015.

This will be the first revision since 2004, and is expected to build upon the current requirements with several new additions. Key areas of change which have already been identified are: scope; terms and definitions; context of the organisation; leadership; policy; environmental aspects; legal requirements and other requirements; environmental objectives; value chain planning and control; and evaluation of compliance.

A spokesperson for A Local Printer said: “As a company, we will not have to make that many changes to our existing ISO 14001 policy/procedures. However, where it will hopefully affect us is the changes to procurement that other businesses will have to adopt—extending environmental influence into the value chain, with implications for procurement. As a minimum, this could include the process by which procurement decisions are taken, and whether they involve the consideration of the environmental characteristics of the purchased materials or services.

“In a nutshell, this could be a huge opportunity for eco suppliers or suppliers that are ISO 14001-compliant. As a minimum, all businesses with ISO 14001 will have to demonstrate that they have considered the use of eco materials/products within their purchase chain, i.e. eco-friendly printing and paper.”
