Airsea Containers Ltd Reports on Forthcoming Changes to Lithium Battery Transportation

Merseyside, United Kingdom (15th August, 2012) – Airsea Containers Ltd, a leading provider of packaging solutions for dangerous goods transportation, comment as it is revealed that changes are set to take place to the transportation of lithium batteries from January 2013.

The ICAO Dangerous Goods Panel (DGP) met in October 2011 and February 2012 to discuss revised procedures for the transportation of lithium batteries; specifically, for the handling of bulk shipments prepared under Section II of Packing Instructions 965 and 968 to appear amongst the information provided to the pilot in command.

These amendments are set to be incorporated into the 54th edition of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations, effective 1st January 2013 once approved by the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation) Council.

These changes include the introduction of New Section II lithium ion (PI 965 II) and lithium metal (PI 968 II) cell and batteries quantity limits per package, and New Section 1B for lithium ion (PI 965 1B) and metal (PI 968 1B).

A spokesperson for Airsea Containers Ltd commented: “Amongst the changes outlined for New Section IB includes the requirement for dangerous goods training for personnel involved in the transport of IB batteries; a dangerous goods acceptance check; and a summary NOTOC (Notification to Captain) detailing the quantity and type of items for transport.

“These upcoming amendments will increase the security and safety involved with transporting dangerous goods, and we will fully support these changes when they come into effect.”
