Northampton, UK (4th December, 2012) – GoodnessDirect, a leading online provider of health foods, eco-friendly products and supplements, comments on a recent study which linked green coffee beans to weight loss.
A study in international journal Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome and Obesity claims that green coffee beans can aid with weight loss. As other recent studies have found that drinking coffee might offer some protection against type 2 diabetes, researchers decided to search for the constituents which may lead to these effects. To do this, 16 overweight people – with an average age of 33 – took a high dose of green coffee extract, a low dose green coffee extract and a placebo separately for six weeks, with two weeks between each phase. During the tests, the participants maintained the same diets, and their body weight, BMI (Body Mass Index) and body fat percentage were measured before, during and after each section of the trial.
Both green coffee dosages led to reductions in body weight, percentage body fat and BMI; percentage body fat saw a reduction with the placebo, yet body weight and BMI remained unaffected. With the green coffee extract, participants lost almost 18 pounds on average, and 4.4% of body fat; 88% of them also maintained this weight loss four months following the tests, with no side effects reported. The study also found that coffee contains chlorogenic acid, which seems to affect glucose and fat metabolism, primarily in unroasted or green coffee beans.
Faith Driscoll, Manager of GoodnessDirect, said: “Supplements are an essential element of our service to health shoppers, and the increasing popularity of green coffee extract will be an exciting addition to our diet shelf in 2013. Not everyone knows about green coffee yet but, with recent endorsements and its scientific credibility, we believe that green coffee extract will become the weight loss supplement for 2013 – we’re already telling all of our customers about it. In addition to raising the metabolic rate and inhibiting the release of glucose in the body, green coffee is also believed to be a powerful antioxidant, something else that is very attractive to our customers.”
