Chichester, UK (15th May, 2013) – ANS Group Europe, leading designers of indoor and outdoor living walls, has completed the installation of a living wall at Birmingham New Street Station.
ANS Group Europe began its work on the project in April 2012—in collaboration with Mace and Network Rail—in order to create a green wall in keeping with the station’s massive overhaul. The living wall is made from plants chosen specifically for their ecological biodiversity and wildlife value, as well as their suitability to sheltered site conditions and the station’s southerly aspect; the plants are also mainly evergreen to ensure year-round planting structure and colour.
The living wall was installed on a steel frame, and has a total area of 324m; its design is curvilinear and features a random pattern for an eye-catching, verdant aesthetic appeal. Birmingham New Street Station’s revamp has been designed with an aim to achieve an ‘Excellent’ rating by BREEAM (the world’s foremost environmental assessment method and rating system for buildings), and the living wall has been a key component.
“For a long time now, residents of Birmingham have been calling for New Street Station to be overhauled, and we’re thrilled to add a touch of natural beauty to its new look,” said Jackie Olby of ANS Group Europe. “We know that visitors to New Street Station will love the green wall and the unique quality it brings!”
