Liverpool, UK (24th September, 2012) – Liverpool ONE, a large shopping and leisure destination in the heart of Liverpool, is hosting two installations as part of the Liverpool Biennial.
Commissioned for Liverpool Biennial 2012, two unique installations will pop up at Liverpool ONE providing visitors with the opportunity to see world-class art at the heart of one of the UK’s most popular retail destinations.
The work by internationally acclaimed artists will be on display between the 8th of September and the 25th of November.
On Peter’s Lane, ‘The Lift’ by Oded Hirsch bursts through the pristine shopping district. The Lift immediately interferes with how space can be moved through and points disconcertingly to the possibility of an unknown, subterranean place.
On Thomas Steers Way, Elmgreen & Dragset’s ‘But I’m on the Guest List Too!’, examines the hierarchy of values and meritocracy established by celebrity culture. The artists’ oversized V.I.P. door – slightly ajar – invites the viewer in but cannot be opened fully; the work can be treated as a sculpture as well as a frustrating barrier to potential social advancement.
Chris Bliss Estate Director at Liverpool ONE said: “Liverpool ONE prides itself on providing a well-rounded visitor experience as well as taking part in city-wide events and a wider dialogue with the city. Liverpool ONE opened in 2008 when the city was celebrating its year as European Capital of Culture, and we are keen to continue this legacy by supporting festivals such as the Liverpool Biennial.
“A trip to Liverpool ONE is always much more than a shopping trip: we pride ourselves on continuing to enhance the experience we offer, and now we’re very pleased to be able to add contemporary art to our roster. We look forward to hearing the reactions of our visitors.”
Sally Tallant, Liverpool Biennial artistic director, said: “Liverpool Biennial 2012 has been curated to ensure that each of the 10 weeks of the festival has a distinctive and exciting programme that includes free exhibitions, performances, screenings, talks and family workshops in galleries, museums and sites across the city. I am particularly thrilled that we have expanded the Biennial to include new organisations and venues including Liverpool ONE in the heart of the city. For 2012, Liverpool Biennial presents works by 242 artists unfolding across Liverpool in 27 different locations; I look forward to seeing local people as well as international visitors taking part in everything the Biennial has to offer.”
