Carter and Carter Solicitors Comments on Increase in Cyclist Injuries

Stockport, United Kingdom (5th July 2012) – Carter and Carter Solicitors, professional personal injury solicitors in Manchester, have commented on statistics showing an increase in the number of injuries to cyclists.

There has been a 16% increase in serious injuries caused to cyclists on UK roads over the past year, as well as a rise in serious accidents for pedestrians and motorcyclists. Road fatalities in general have increased for the first time in nearly ten years.

There are various theories as to why this rise has occurred. One thought is that there are ever more people using the road, which has led to them becoming more hazardous. Another theory is that government cuts to local authorities have had an effect on the roads.

It has been reported that 65% of all local UK authorities have experienced cuts in their budgets for road safety engineering in the past year. Some police forces have also found that they have had their budgets cut for equipment such as safety cameras, as well as suffering diminished resources to traffic policing in general.

Simon Best, CEO of the Institute of Advanced Motorists, has petitioned the Government to re-introduce casualty reduction targets in an attempt to get them to allocate more resources for road safety. Best commented that slashing budgets for ensuring safe routes and crossings for children and other pedestrians and driver training for driving offenders does not make sense.

A spokesperson for Carter and Carter Solicitors said: “It is always sad to see that injuries and accidents of any kind are on the rise. As our roads are getting busier and more hazardous all the time, cyclists are going to be put in more and more danger. It also doesn’t help that local authority funding is being cut to such a degree, especially for areas as important as road safety. However, those who have been injured in an accident may well be eligible for compensation, and we will do our utmost to ensure they receive the maximum amount of compensation possible.”
