DayInsure Comments as Motorists Face £100 Speeding Fines to Support Victims

Cheshire, United Kingdom (24th May, 2012) – DayInsure, a leading online provider of temporary insurance for cars, vans and motorhomes in the UK, comment as MP Kenneth Clarke discloses that motorists face a huge hike in speeding fines to as much as £100, to help fill a funding gap for victims of crime.

Drivers could see standard £60 fines increase by almost 70 per cent, despite the fact that there is no direct victim in many motoring offences. Kenneth Clarke hopes the expansion of the surcharge scheme will raise an extra £50 million a year for the government.

Motoring groups said the plan was little more than a “tax” on drivers and reinforced the view that tickets are issued as a money raiser, rather than enforcing the law.

Andrew Howard, the AA’s head of road safety, said: “We do have a problem when speeding offences are being used as a way of compensating victims of crime. The idea that motorists are being used to raise money to pay victims of crime is something we have opposed in the past and will continue to do so.”

A spokesperson for DayInsure commented: “Although it does seem like another unfair and unjustified ‘tax’ on motorists, Mr Clarke’s proposed hike in the speeding payment fine could actually contribute towards encouraging Britain’s drivers to be more careful on the roads.

“When we look at the bigger picture, it seems possible that the fine hike could result in motorists driving more safely to avoid paying a larger fine, and thus reduce the amount of motoring offenses and accidents taking place.”
