England 14/07/2012- Despite the recession people are still giving Amethyst jewellery as a gift
Amethyst jewellery has always been popular and has never completely gone out of fashion. There are several reasons for this, but without a doubt, the main one is that it is so beautiful. There is something about the colour and iridescence of the stone that captivates people. There genuinely is no other colour, in nature, quite like that of a classic violet amethyst. The fact that the stone is often almost translucent gives it a mystical quality as well as a deep and engaging beauty. The name comes from an Ancient Greek word that means intoxicated, so clearly it has been seen as a captivating stone since time immemorial.
The amethyst stone has a very long history of being used for jewellery. It was very popular amongst the ancient Egyptians. Carved pendants have been found made out of Amethyst at both Egyptian and Roman archaeological sites. They are mainly intaglios engravings, which meant that the engraving formed an impression in the gemstone, rather than being in relief.
Other early examples of amethyst jewellery have been found in Anglo Saxon graves in the form or strings of beads. Many European soldiers wore amethyst amulets because they believed that it helped them to keep a cool head. Several ancient cultures believed that it protected them against poisoning or drunkenness, which is why cups made out of amethyst were once very popular. Mystics believe that amethysts have the power to soothe and protect the mind. It has a calming effect and putting a small piece of amethyst under an insomniacs pillow is an ancient cure for sleeplessness.
